My cockapoo Chewie at 4 months old.

In September 2023, I finally brought home Chewie, a fluffy bundle of joy I had been dreaming of for months.

My anticipation for a puppy began in the spring of 2023 when my family and I traveled to the UK and Ireland, unburdened by pet responsibilities.

We had lost our Bichon Frise, Brady, in December 2022 to oral cancer and heart failure.

It was a devastating time. Just a month before, a close friend and writing client the same age as me unexpectedly passed away from RSV. Around that time, I also discovered I had diabetes. It was an unbelievably tough period.

RIP Brady, I will always love you.

Then came September 16th, 2023, when Chewie, our cockapoo puppy, joined our household.

The house was filled with the joyful sounds of tiny paws and playful yips, and I was on cloud nine. It was my imagined Instagram-worthy life – playtime, snuggles, and instant companionship.

But soon, the reality set in.
